Calabria – a hidden gem in Italy

White beaches, turquoise crystal-clear water, secluded bays and quaint villages. Calabria is the southernmost region of the mainland of Italy and for sure one of the most beautiful ones. I spent 5 days exploring the area around Tropea and fell in love with this part of my favourite country. The region is already a popular holiday destination among the locals, but it is still relatively unknown among foreign tourists. Calabria not only has a lot to offer in terms of bathing, but also culinary delights and is therefore perfect for a relaxing holiday to enjoy the typical southern Italian flair!

We had a direct flight from Vienna to Lamezia Terme. This city is about 1 hour by car from Tropea. There are lots of car rental companies at the airport, so I would definitely recommend a car to give you the flexibility to explore the area. There are also 2 other airports in Calabria – Crotone or Reggio Calabria, but they were not an option for us. Another way to get to Calabria is by ferry from Sicily. The island of Sicily is located directly next to the city of Reggio Calabria and is therefore not far away, so it’s also a good way to combine these two destinations 🙂

We were there for 5 days at the end of September, beginning of October. At that time it was still pleasantly warm and perfect for sunbathing and swimming. In general, I would recommend the low season if possible, as always. Even if there aren’t many foreign tourists here, it can get very crowded with the Italians themselves, especially in August when the whole country is on holiday. We were sometimes lucky enough to have beaches or viewpoints all to ourselves at this time.

Hotel

We stayed at the hotel „La Bussola“ in Capo Vaticano, which is about 15 minutes by car from Tropea. The area is quiet and beautiful, a little further away from the sea, but can be reached in 5 minutes by car. La Bussola also offers free shuttle buses to the partner beach (Spiaggia Grotticelle). The hotel itself is simple, but leaves nothing to be desired. There is a large breakfast buffet, a bar and a good restaurant. We had a 4-course dinner there every day, which was really delicious. But my highlight was definitely the tropical pool and garden, with lots and lots of palm trees. Click here to go directly to our hotel.

During one of our sunset adventures on our short trip we found another hotel that I’ve already made a note of for next time, because it looked truly amazing: Hotel Villaggio Il Gabbiano

Tropea

The small town of Tropea is located directly on the Tyrrhenian Sea and is known for its cliff-top historic centre, the church of Santa Maria dell’Isola, which is perched on a rock by the sea, and its onions. Above all, however, it impresses with its typically Italian and quaint charm and the dreamlike backdrop of the turquoise sea. We spent almost every day in Tropea because we loved it so much.

things to do & see here:

The two viewpoints of the church of Santa Maria dell’Isola are particularly worth seeing and very impressive. These are located directly in the town centre, one from the terrace right next to the „Al Cannone“ restaurant and the other from the balcony at the end of Corso Vittorio Emanuele. These two locations can be found on Google Maps, named „Terrazza panoramica Tropea“ and „Balconata Tropea“.

Right next to the terrace („Terrazza panoramica Tropea“) steps lead down to the beach. From here you can visit the church of Santa Maria dell’Isola, which I would definitely recommend. For an entrance fee of €3 you can visit the garden of the church and also have a wonderful view of the town of Tropea.

Restaurants & Cafés in Tropea

We had the best (and second) breakfast every day at „Café del Corso“ in Tropea. I am absolutely in love with the Cannoli Siciliani there 🙂 Also highly recommended: Sfogliatella & Brioche con Gelato! The café also invites you to simply linger and watch the hustle and bustle of the city and the typical Italian lifestyle.

For an aperitif with a unique view, I highly recommend the „Terrazza degli Dei bar“. We celebrated my birthday there and especially with this view – it is one to remember 🙂 It was truly special at sunset and the focaccia was amazing.

Even if the Google reviews suggest otherwise, we ended up at „Bar Papillon“ to try a typical Calabrian Tartufo (ice cream). We were more than thrilled, especially when we were served with a huge plate full of Calabrian delicacies with our aperitif, even though we were already full.

For a tasty pizza slice in between, I recommend „Pizza Roma“ near the terrace I told you before. We took a pizza with us and then sat down on the terrace and enjoyed the view.

Otherwise, just let yourself drift and stroll through the city of Tropea. There is something to discover on every corner or street. Taste your way through the delicious Italian restaurants and snack bars and enjoy the wonderful views of the sea and the cliffs.

For a visit to the beach, I can recommend the Spiaggia della Rotonda with a view of the rock and the church. This is also the beach that you can see from Balconata Tropea. We even had a section here all to ourselves at the beginning of October and the water is incredibly beautiful, turquoise & clear! 🙂

Good to know: if you are in Tropea by car it is best to park outside the city centre, as Tropea is a „limited traffic zone“ and we were told that this is very strictly controlled and the fines can be very high. We therefore always parked on the street „Viale Stazione“. (Costs are about 2€ per hour)

Capo Vaticano

The area of Capo Vaticano was my favourite beside Tropea. From the cliffs here you have a fantastic view of the secluded bays below with turquoise-coloured water, of Sicily and the Strait of Messina and, on a good day, even of the islands of Stromboli, Lipari and Vulcano. Unfortunately, we were not able to reach one of the bays by foot, because most of them are only accessible by boat or the paths down lead through private grounds.

view from Belvedere Capo Vaticano

We have been to two viewpoints at Capo Vaticano. We saw the most beautiful sunsets from „Belvedere Capo Vaticano“. The atmosphere there was truly unique and we were almost alone every time. The other viewpoint is „Capo Vaticano lighthouse“. From here you have a beautiful view of the coast towards Sicily. There is a small path leading down to a beach, but I would recommend taking the car to the next beach, which at least looked nicer from the boat and saves you the steep walk downhill.

sunsets from Belvedere Capo Vaticano

We went to the beach at Spiaggia di Grotticelle, not far from the lighthouse and also the partner beach of our hotel. There are several restaurants, shops and a boat rental service there. At the end of September, we were all alone here at sunset, which was truly magical. 🙂

Trips

From Tropea, you can take a boat trip to the Aeolian Islands and visit the Stromboli volcano, for example. Unfortunately, we couldn’t do a tour like this, but I’ll definitely do it next time. As far as we could find out, these excursions are also the only way to get from Tropea or the region to the island of Stromboli. We couldn’t find a ferry connection or anything similar to get there on our own.

However, we decided to do a boat tour around the coast from Tropea to Capo Vaticano, in other words the areas and beaches that we had already seen from the land. I definitely recommend it, especially the view of Tropea and the crystal-clear water is wonderful. The tour was about 3 hours and we paid €30 per person.

Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to these places during our short trip, also we wanted to take it a little easier this time, but these are still on my list for next time and are said to be highly recommended:

  • Reggio Calabria
  • Aeolian Islands
  • Cosenza
  • Picco

In short: Calabria is definitely worth a visit! Especially at the end of September, it is very quiet, cheap and still nice and warm. Compared to other Italian regions, the area is less touristy and very authentic. I will definitely be back 🙂

  • Reggio Calabria
  • Äolische/Liparische Inseln
  • Cosenza
  • Picco
